Monster shark landed off Isle of Wight By Peter Law
A MONSTER shark - one of the biggest ever hooked in British waters - has been caught off the Isle of Wight. The beast, weighing an estimated 500lb (226kg), was the "catch of a lifetime" for Danny Vokins, who has been chasing sharks for the past 30 years. It took the amateur fisherman more than two hours to reel in the 14ft (4.26m) thresher shark. Using live mackerel as bait on an 80lb line, the "freak" shark struck at 1.45pm about five miles south east of St Catherine's, the island's most southerly point.

8 Feb 1981 Pete Saul, posting on Elasmo-L   to come 366.8   The largest thresher shark officially caught in New Zealand is 366.8kg, caught Feb 8 1981. It is not listed as the IGFA all-tackle record for some reason, but is the womens world record on 37kg tackle. There are existing photographs of larger thresher sharks caught in New Zealand but the IGFA revised all records at some stage due to doubts about species identity. There are certainly photos of threshers in excess of 900 pounds.
cheers, Pete Saul

14 Oct 2007 Douglas Herdson   5.8?* ~400   A large thresher was entangled in the ropes of a line of lobster pots 6 miles off Charlestown, Cornwall on 14th October 2007. It was 340 kg gutted, so thought to be around 400 kg entire. The largest Alopias vulpinus I can find reference to is the IGSAF record fish of 348 kg entire (no further details). Though there was also a ref to a Alopias superciliosus of 952 lb (= 433 kg).

Biggest Thresher Shark Ever, caught off Cornish Coast (again).
Roger Nowell, skipper of the inshore trawler F.V. Imogen (PZ110), was out fishing for squid and John Dory in the English Channel to the south of the Land’s End peninsula when on his echo sounder he spotted a shoal of scad (or horse mackerel) near to the bottom.  He shot his trawl, and hauled up a surprise catch, for amongst the fish was a large thresher shark.

* using Kohler et al. 1995; W (kg) = 1.8821*10-4* FL^2.5188; FL = 0.5474*TL + 7.0262; note that it is 'dangerous' to use their data for
extrapolatation to obtain mass from TL or FL from mass for *large* threshers (that is extrapolating beyond the range of the available data). It appears to overestimate TL and underestimate W for large fish.
Calculated TL (from W) and W (from FL) carry extra digits to allow check on the calculation of the estimated values.
